The Vedic Conversation - Episode 7 Growth

The Vedic Conversation - Episode 7 Growth Navigating Our Own Personal Evolution

Each episode we take a different topic and look at it through the lens of storytelling and from the perspective of the the Veda, an ancient but still very relevant body of knowledge from India.

This is joint venture with Anthony Thompson, a Vedic Meditation teacher based in London and Vedic colleagues Derrick Yanford in New York and Rory Kinsella in Sydney.

In this episode, we talk about Growth and how with greater awareness we can better navigate our personal evolution. At the end we offer a practical exercise so you can apply this knowledge to your daily life.

Here’s my story about growth:

Years ago when I set up my business I had to buy a computer. Now it may be hard to imagine this but there was a time when computers and email didn't exist.

It was only in the last six months of working for a large company that I ever used a computer, and even then very occasionally.

I was excited to be setting up a new business and knew having a computer would be a good idea.

Apple seemed to be what I wanted and when I purchased the machine, which was basically a box and a screen, I was offered the chance of some training.

Even in those early days, when Apple stores didn't exist, the company had a good customer service ethos.

I had to go to a light industrial site near Heathrow Airport, 20 miles away, and I joined a group of people for half a day to be taught how to use our new purchases.

This included how to turn the machine on and off and how to use the mouse which was connected by a cable.

The mouse was a novel concept and it's funny to recall how people were looking at the screen, moving the mouse and then running out of tabletop because nobody realised that we could pick it up and just keep gently swiping in a circular motion.

We've all come along way since then and it's second nature to tap, double and triple tap, swipe, pinch and expand.

Inputting and getting information is now an intuitive process which allows us to think beyond making something happen.

I remember when my parents got their first computers. They were of the generation that was taught not to touch something -  it might break, and they found it really difficult in the beginning to play around and be uninhibited.

You only have to look at a small child using a phone or tablet and see how they are charmed in many different directions as they just stab and swipe away until they get the hang of it.

If we are rigid in our approach to learning all we are really doing is taking in information but not understanding it and then applying it - preventing growth from taking its natural course.

We need that fine combination of balance and adaptability to put in place a strong foundation.

When we're able to be receptive to new information and stimuli and give ourselves space to get perspective and integrate it, we can then move forward, casting aside preconceptions, inhibitions and fear.
