Meditation & Sculpture
Thursday 30th January 2020 18.30 - 20.30
Following the sellout success of the last event we return to the Bowman Gallery to examine in depth the latest sculptures by Emily Young.
In this evening of Meditation and Art you will have the pleasure of examining the latest work by the renowned sculptor Emily Young. This will be followed by a short period (20minutes) of meditation which will allow you time to assimilate what you have seen, and clear your mind before looking at the sculptures again.
This rare opportunity to examine art and then absorb it by meditating in the following twenty minutes of silence will give you time to discern subtleties and nuances, differences and connections which might not have been apparent the first time.
If you or your friends are not meditators you will be given easy to understand instructions and simple guidance.
Emily Young is acclaimed as 'Britain's greatest living stone sculptor' - FT, 2013.
'Her sculptures meditate on time, nature, memory, man's relationship to the the Earth' - FT.
The primary objective of Emily Young’s sculpture is to bring the relationship of humankind and the planet into closer conjunction, a relationship which has been occluded by millennia of fantasies about the nature of power and human autonomy. The natural beauty, history and energy of material stone, including its capacity to embody human consciousness, has the potential to extend our experiences of being human in a vast unknowable universe.
Her approach allows the viewer to comprehend a commonality across deep time, geography and cultures. Her constant preoccupation is our troubled relationship with the planet, which underscores her studio practice. In her combination of traditional carving skills allied with technology where necessary, she produces work which marries the contemporary with the ancient, manifesting a unique, serious and poetic presence.
